    Minox Telescopes
    Minox Spotting 'Scopes.

The four telescopes in the Minox range provide high-magnification viewing suitable for many activities. Although mainly used by bird watchers, they are also used by plane-spotters, wildlife watchers, target shooters and archers to name but a few. The 'scopes come in either the angled version (below left) or the straight through version (below right).

MD 62mm Angled ED MD 62mm Straight ED

The angled version is generally the most popular as it allows for more comfortable prolonged viewing and does not need the tripod to be extended as high as with the straight version thus retaining more overall stability. It is however, a purely personal choice! They are all fully waterproof with an aluminium body and the prism housing is rubber armoured to provide extra protection.

The telescopes (either angled or straight) come in two versions, one with a standard multicoated objective lens, and one with an objective lens made from ED or Extra low Dispersion glass (other names include APO or Fluorite). The use of ED glass in this way maintains the image quality at high magnifications and in poor light conditions, it also cuts down on chromatic abberation or colour fringing (narrow yellow or blue fringes which are more obvious at the edges of hard edged bright objects) by about 95%. In some telescopes the use of ED glass will add up to £300 to the cost of a non-ED telescope, with Minox it is £120.

    Eyepieces
Minox telescope bodies are fully compatible with all 5 eyepieces in the range. They all use a bayonet fit to make the interchanging very easy and quick.

20-45x Zoom 22x Wide 30xWW Extra Wide 21-42x LER Zoom

The 20-45x Zoom and 22xW eyepieces have a very good price:performance ratio and are an excellent choice if you are on a tight budget or are buying the non-ED versions of the telescope. However, the two top of the range eyepieces, 30xWW and 21-42x LER Zoom are optically better in terms of clarity, field of view and ease of use as their price reflects. They enhance the performance of the ED telescope bodies and should be the natural choice if you do purchase an ED 'scope body. Both the 30xWW and 21-42x LER feature twist-up eyecups which enables spectacle wearers to have a full field of view.
